Physical Therapy Programs

Mitchell Said:

Can you switch from physical therapy programs?

We Answered:

No-you can not. Each PT school teaches the same things but in different orders. Also they have x number of seats so they do not take transfers.

You may be able to start new in a new school but repeat your first year. Also you will not have a BS so you may have to earn a BS. Either stay where you are or tansfer now.

Minnie Said:

Does anyone know any 6 year physical therapy programs at any colleges or universities?

We Answered:

I don't know of any programs specificially in the south, but Northern Illinois University is also one. You are also correct about SLU. University of Illinois is actually housed at UIC which is now a doctorate level program.

Someone mentioned the APTA website which is a good resource. Look for programs that are listed as "D5"...these are mostly MS level programs which are most likely to be the 6 year programs.

does university of illinois urbana offer physical therapy programs?

We Answered:

No, you could certainly do your undergraduate work there, but if you want to go into PT or OT, you'd have to transfer to UIC for your post graduate work

Heidi Said:

i have a question about physical therapy programs?

We Answered:

Most 3+3 programs result in a master's degree. 4+3 programs are usually doctorate. In this country, both the MPT and DPT sit for the same licensure exam and are considered entry level degree...you will get the same basic education, but the DPT is meant to have little higher emphasis in differential diagnosis, imaging, pharmacology, etc than the MPT (although you will get some of that in the MPT program).

With the 3+3 program, you do not have to actually complete your BS prior to the program...but you need to have completed enough credits so that you can be awarded a BS after your first year in the professional phase of the program. Then, after another two years you will typically get an MPT.

Erika Said:

Which website has a list available of the physical therapy programs in the United States?

We Answered:

Go to the education programs section of the APTA website at: http://www.apta.org You will get a list of all the US accredited programs and specs on each one.
