Physical Therapy Reimbursement

Jeffrey Said:

How do I get reimbursement for an injury that happened at a swim meet?

We Answered:

You can check with an attorney, but usually by agreeing to participate in a voluntary sport, you assume the risk. Any swim team I've ever registered for required proof of medical insurance and included a liability waiver.

What are the threats to the Physical Therapy profession?

We Answered:

I agree with Mistify. I will add that there is an increased demand for PTs as the population ages and the premature infants that are born earlier and earlier. An increase in PTAs are a good thing. PT should be the primary person in musc-skeletal problems.

I do not see PT going away. I think another big threat is ATC used as PTA. This is not legal but happens. PT are getting more efficient with evidence based medicine. Patients are getting better sooner. We also need to empower our paitents to take ownership on their rehab.

Joanne Said:

why do so many careers require doctorates now?

We Answered:

Actually, the technology has changed DRAMATICALLY in the past ten years in physical therapy. Treatment and evaluation procedures are becoming much more refined and detailed...much too much for the general physician to be in touch with. Therefore, the responsibility of assessment, and treatment design and implementation has now fallen almost soley on the physical therapist.

We used to receive orders such as "Right shoulder supraspinatus tendonitis. complete range of motion, rotator cuff strengthening and ultrasound. Perform 3x/wk for 4 wks."

Now we get orders that say "Shoulder pain: evaluate and treat." It is now the responsibility of the therapist to decide what is the affected structure and what is the best treatment. Don't get me wrong, we still get orders like the previous...but usually the physician is wrong or poorly informed.

Finally, there is a stronger push for direct access. This would mean you can see a physical therapist for relatively common musculoskeletal complaints...simple back ache or sciatica, etc, without having to first see your physician. However, with that priveledge comes more responsibility. We have to have a keener eye to spot things out of the ordinary and refer the patient to a physician if it appears a problem may be medical in nature. We don't diagnosis the actual medical problem...we just recognize when it is out of the ordinary of the musculoskeletal system.

The salary has grown in the last ten years...but so have many professions. Unfortunately, the doctorate does not result in any significant salary change. Things that are more likely to influence salary include experience, region and specialty certifications. The reimbursement also doesn't change...must like the reimbursement between PTs and PTAs

In conclusion, the DPT and other allied health doctorates were developed out of responsibility, not to make more money.
