Physical Therapy Salaries

Lori Said:

What is the best bachelors degree to get to lead into physical therapy?

We Answered:

It will largely depend on two factors:

1. The school to which you hope to appl for graduate school and their prerequisites

2. The school where you are doing your undergraduate and which specific classes they have in a particular major. In other words, a kinesiology program at one school might have all the classes you need, but at another school it might be slightly different.

Sadly, there are not any REALLY good lead in bachelor's degrees that could get you a decent job if PT school doesn't work out. Athletic training is probably a good choice, but then again the job market for ATCs is very competitive and the field work you have to complete is extensive.

At best, a good BS degree that prepares you for a PT program would also prepare you to enter a different graduate program. For example, if I didn't get into PT school, my plan was to then apply to a speech language pathology program.

Finally, if you are not already about to apply to a PT program, count on your degree being a DPT, not a master's. Nearly all programs are DPT anyway and those which are master's are mostly in the process of switching to the DPT.
