Physical Therapy School Requirements

Susan Said:

Choosing the right graduate school (physical therapy)?

We Answered:

They are all fine institutions. Go visit, meet the profs. See which feel right. No matter what school you pick you need bio 1 and 2, general chem 1 and 2, physics 1 and 2, anatomy, and physiology. Then each school has some variation on the theme-psy, calculus, organic, statistics

Here is the list.

You do not have much time if you are graduating in 2010.

FYI-
You picked 4 of less than 20 colleges that have masters degrees and not DPTs. You may be competing for jobs with candidates that have a DPT. Fortunately for you, jobs are readily available.

google it!

Waiting on reply from physical therapy school...?

We Answered:

Retake the GRE. You might want to take a prep course first - Princeton Review and Kaplan are the two largest, but there are others.

Otherwise you look like a good candidate.

Getting into physical therapy grad school?

We Answered:

It depends on the program. Most DPT programs (if not all) do require completion of your BS. Some MS programs do not require full completion of your degree, but you must have all the prereqs and your gen eds AND have enough credits to be awarded a BS after your first semester in the program

Louis Said:

Biochemistry major wanting to go into Physical Therapy? HELP.?

We Answered:

First, you can get a list of all PT programs in the US at www.apta.org They also have a list of each school's requirements.

It may vary from school to school, but generally PT programs require:
1. At least a year each of general chem, bio and physics
2. One semester of anatomy and physiology
3. 1-3 courses in psychology
4. statistics
5. a semester of trig and/or calc
6. Observation hours with letters of recommendation.

You will probably get your bio and chem requirements, but if you do not have the other classes, find out which ones you need to take based on the program(s) to which you hope to apply.

I would continue to complete your biochem degree if you've already put significant time into it...you'll just need to go outside your major to take the remaining requirements.

Most PT programs are DPT programs (not PhD) which is an entry level clinical doctorate. A few master's degree programs still exist, but the trend is to convert those to DPT programs anyway.

Good luck
