Sports medicine is an umbrella of professions who work with athletes..from PTs to athletic trainers and physician and surgeons. As a PT, you can specialize in treating athletes specifically.You are right in that most programs require you to have a BS degree to enter the PT program. There are some variations on this, but this is the most standard...4 years of undergraduate, 2.5-3 years of graduate work.
You certainly can do your undergraduate work in one place and apply somewhere else for your graduate work. Some schools do give preference to their own graduates, so it's important to know this a head of time from the graduate school you wish to attend.
