Physical Therapy Schools In New York

Wanda Said:

Long Island Physical therapy assistants?

We Answered:

I am a NY PT but from upstate. I work with PTAs. The tuition thing is a big deal. We have had trouble hiring new grads because they need to move out of state south or west to get a salary to pay their huge debt. PTA are in need and do make a decent living. Your gpa probably will not get you into a DPT program anyway. Most schools require a 3.0 but a 3.5 is competative.

I can not do my job without the PTA that I supervise. Most PT do not own their own practice anyway. I have see PTA become directors of PT department in nursing homes and use contract PTs. I work with a PTA who is also a personal has her own pediatric fitness center.

Best wishes

Ruby Said:

What would I need to do to get into physical therapy school?

We Answered:

Physical therapist assistant, is a completely different program (think of nursing versus medical school). The prerequisites for PT school are generally the major sciences: a year each of general chem, bio and physics. It also usually includes anatomy and physiology, trig and/or calc, stats, and various psych courses. So most "pre-PT" students choose a major related to that...kinesiology, exercise science, etc. As you near completion of your BS degree, you can make the final application to physical therapy school.

Masters in PHysical Therapy for foreign graduates.?

We Answered:

Mary makes a good reference. However, what you may want to be aware of is that currently, foreign educated PTs from the Philippines, Egypt, Pakistan and India are prohibited from taking the NPTE exam (the exam you'll take after going to MGH) due to security breeches of the exam in these countries. Once a new version of the test has been developed can PTs from these countries take the exam. I wait a little before enrolling in the program.

If i wanted to stay in an apartment in New York?

We Answered:

Apartments in New York may require a long lease from you.
I would look for an extended stay hotel if only in NY for a few weeks.
Most people choose the Envoy Club across from NYU Medical Center.

It can be a starting point until you find a solo or roomate apartment.

Good luck with your travels and studies.
