Physical Therapy Training

Marc Said:

Is Wilmington College in Ohio a good college to go to for Athletic Training and Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

Wilmington College is not accred. to offer PT. It looks like a great ATC program. You could go there for undergrad and then apply to PT school since it is a grad program anyway.

Here is the list of PT schools

How strange would it be to major in Animal Science if you're in Pre-Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

There is nothing wrong with this...I've known PTs who completed their undergraduate degree in dance, art and actuary science...go for it!

Cecil Said:

Why such frequent strength training exercises in physical therapy?

We Answered:

The difference is between strengthening healthy muscle (ie, building connective tissue) versus strengthening or remodeling and injured tissue (reorganizing the structure). You are trying to accomplish different things with each exercise. Injured muscles and tendons become disorganized and are made with an inferior type of collagen. Putting a controlled, intermittent stress on it, triggers the tissue to mature and reorganize...this requires frequent loading throughout the day.

The other consideration, in your case, specifically is that you are in a brace (presumably after an injury or surgery) is that you cannot do maximum contraction right now because the maximum load would overload the structure. ) Therefore, we have to work at lower loads, but more frequently to minimize atrophy.

Dorothy Said:

can I major in athletic training and get a masters in physical therapy?

We Answered:

Yes you can. Although you might have to take a few courses outside your major in order to complete the PT prerequisites. Also be aware that most master's degree programs for PT are in the process of converting to the DPT. However, this should not affect your ability to apply to the program.

College degree in physical therapy and athletic training?

We Answered:

Yes, your physical therapy degree would take precedense over your athletic training degree. Although ATCs require extensive field work , the coursework of physical therapy is much more rigorous and stressess the disease model process and evaluation. It is much more holistic in terms of medicine than athletic training. You will also have a much larger population base since ATCs are restricted to working ONLY with athletes. Many ATCs go on to finish their PT degree.

If you want to work primarily with athletes, you can do this in physical therapy without having an ATC, but having the ATC may certainly expose you to that population.

You could certainly get your BS in ATC, kinesiology, or anything really...as long as you complete the prerequisite coursework to apply to a physical therapy program. At this time, all PT programs in the US are either at the level of a master's degree or doctorate degree. The struture of the program will vary from school to school...some will only take you after you have completed your BS, some will take you your junior year, award you a "health sciences degree" after your senior year and finish with your masters in PT.

In a nutshell, you would declare an undergraduate major (which could inlcude ATC), but then you would apply to a master degree program or DPT program once you have completed that's schools prerequisite requirements.

Miguel Said:

Is it typically easy to get into a physical therapy program after getting a bachelors in athletic training?

We Answered:

Having your BS in ATC in no way guarantees your acceptance into PT school. It will be based on your individual merit. You'll get most of the classes that you need for the prerequisites, but you have to do well in them and demonstrate effective leadership and personal skills and score well on the GRE.

Depending the actual courses required by your specific ATC program, you might need to take a few courses outside ATC to get the prerequisites you need.
