Physical Therapy Undergraduate Programs

Becky Said:

What does an undergraduate student have to do/take to be accepted into physical therapy program?

We Answered:

It depends on which school you wish to be admitted to, but as a general rule, you must accomplish the following:
1. Complete a minimum of 50 hours of documented observation in a PT setting and obtain references from these sources
2. Complete the prerequisite courses required by the particular program which is usually a year of chem, and physics, a year and a half of bio and psych, anatomy and physiology, statistics, trig and or calculus, all your general education requirements.
3. Obtain the minimum GPA as required by the program (usually 3.0) in your prerequisite courses.
4. If your bachelor's degree is required for admittance to the program, then of course finish that
5. If the GRE is required, finish that.

It will highly depend on the program structure...some have a 3/3 configuration...you enter as a senior, are awarded a BS after the frist year, and complete an MS after the third year. Some some a 4/2 configuration...you must complete a BS/BA and then complete the MS in two years. Finally, some are 4/3...resulting in the DPT. You can review the requirements for admission from all US accredited schools by going to the APTA website at www.apta.org

David Said:

Is the physical therapy program at csulb for undergraduate or grad students?

We Answered:

In general, PT is a graduate degree. Some schools offer a 3+3 program and you start as a a freshman. I do not know what school is a csulb is. If it is Cal State long beach, it is a master program currently. All of the schools label D5 on the link have masters degrees but they are all in the process of changing into a DPT program. It is one of 10 schools in the country that still has a MS program. I would recommend a DPT program as you would be one of the last MS students in the country. If you are not ready to apply now you probably not going to have an MS as an option.
