Physical Therapy Volunteer

Irma Said:

Should I know anything before volunteering in Physical Therapy?

We Answered:

Volunteering is a good idea...in fact, it's required by most programs.

You might be interviewed, you might actually have to provide proof of immunization and/or submit to a drug test. It really depends on the facilities policies. If you volunteer at a hospital or large health organization, expect there to be a lot of policies in place.

Go to the APTA website at: www.apta.org so you can at least get an idea of what the field of PT is all about.

Nearly all of us have been in your shoes and are willing to help out future students. If you are looking to volunteer in a hospital, you will most likely need to go through their volunteer office. Otherwise, for a small private clinic, I would simply leave a message for the clinic manager inquiring about volunteer opportunities.

Jane Said:

Do you really have to volunteer for physical therapy before your freshman semester?

We Answered:

If you were hoping to enter the program as a freshman direct admit (ie, you are guaranteed admission as long as you mantain your GPA and meet other requirements before the professional phase).

However, you can also enter the program as a post-baccelaureate.

It's not hard to volunteer in physical therapy...we all had to do it.

In our own clinic, we have volunteers ranging from high school students to college juniors and seniors. They do a variety of clerical and housekeeping tasks and may observe us on occasion.

Caroline Said:

physical therapy?

We Answered:

I am not in a PT program but I plan to apply in the fall. I have done my volunteer and observational hours and all you have to do is basically contact the physical therapist at a hospital or rehab setting and they are normally more than willing to help out since they know they were more than likely once in your position. I actually got in contact with the Volunteer Department of the hospital in my area and they set me up with the volunteer work in an inpatient setting but when I did outpatient I just asked one of the pts and they were very helpful in the whole process.

Christian Said:

can anyone tell where to volunteer as a physical therapy assistant?

We Answered:

Call a hospital or place that has PTAs and tell them your situation. Ask them if you can volunteer. Or call Canadian colleges that teach PTA and ask them for help finding a place.

Discuss It!
