Physiotherapy Physical Therapy

Hilda Said:

Physical Therapy (Physiotherapy)?

We Answered:

As a board certified pediatric physical therapist, it depends on your problem. If your problem is more congenital or developmental, I would see a pediatric therapist. If it is an injury or orthopedic problem such as an ACL tear or spondololisthesis, go to an out patient facility. It is not necessarily your age but your problem.

Walter Said:

Physiotherapy or physical therapy. what are some of the techniques/methods?

We Answered:

Physical Therapy uses modalities (Ultrasound, heat, ice, electrical stimulation) as well as exercises and manual techniques to aid in tissue healing or to decrease pain and prevent problems from happening again. PT's are usually very involved in educating their patients about the condition and advising of different ways to do things or how to change the ways we do things to prevent problems or help the conditions that are already present. PT's will usually do an interview with you to talk about your medical history, what is bothering you and how it happened (if there was something that you know caused it). They will also ask you what your goals are for physical therapy, what do you want to accomplish by coming to the sessions. They will also do measurements of range of motion and strength testing as well as special tests for the specific joint or to help them confirm a problem that they think you might have. I hope this has helped.

Bob Said:

Does anyone know the difference between physiotherapy and physical therapy?

We Answered:

They are the same...the term physical therapy is commonly used in the US while physiotherapy is commonly used in the UK, Europe and Australia.

Stephanie Said:

Physiotherapy (Physical Therapy) for back?

We Answered:

For a 17 year old to have back and radiating leg pain should be considered an unusual situation. (It's more typical between the ages of 25-55) You really should follow up with a physician prior to PT.

If your physician is confident that there are no serious pathologies, I would recommend you see a physical therapist who is certified in mechanical diagnosis and therapy ( go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org ) where focus will be on educating what you can do to cure your own pain. Exercises are individualized and brief.

Hugh Said:

Is physical therapy similiar to physiotherapy or are they both totally different?

We Answered:

Its the same thing..except in a few European countries, where it is slightly different. In the US, the preferred term is physical therapy, but the rest of the world calls it physiotherapy.
