Recovery Physical Therapy

Evelyn Said:

How painful is the recovery from having your shoulder scoped?

We Answered:

this really depends on quite a few factors. first of all, not all shoulder scopes are the same. it really depends on what the surgeon does during the scope, the implications of a rotator cuff repair versus a simple diagnostic arthroscopy vs. a subacromial decompression vs. a labrum repair are all very different for post-op pain and rehab. it also depends on how well you can tolerate pain. so hard to say...good luck man

Ankle Surgery Recovery and Therapy?

We Answered:

oh poor girl, i had the same thing done in July and it is painful. The recovery time on crutches for me was 6 weeks and then to a walking boot to the knee for 3 weeks then a shorter one for 2 weeks, i started physically therapy the last week i was in the walking boot to the knee. It helped a ton because over the long time my leg was stuck in the same position and imobalized. She really will need physical therapy it is extremely helpful to get the scar tissue out and work on moving it. The recovery is painful especially the first 2 weeks for me was all pain. Crutches are not fun, but they are so nice to be able to get around. Ice and elevate as much as possible is my advice and stay on top of the pain meds (the doctor told me to take them on time instead of waiting until it really hurt because it heal faster when you are not in pain) I wish her luck!

I would love some information about ACL repair and recovery?

We Answered:

His post op recovery will depend a lot of the type of graft used. With patellar tendon grafts, these tendons are fairly strong and ability to progress in therapy is rather quick...however, regaining full strength of the quads is very difficult. With a cadaver graft, regaining strength is not as much of an issue as protecting the graft from failing in the initial post-operative recovery period. For hamstring grafts, regaining strength is not as much of an issue, but this graft tends to be a little looser...good for those who are still growing or older adults who are not very active.

In all, he might be in PT anywhere between 3-6 months...and full potential recovery can take about a year.

Crystal Said:

How important is it to attend physical therapy after ACL reconstruction?

We Answered:

Any home therapy you can do is recommended for continual good range of motion. I had ACL done 1 year ago. Do what you can at home. Your knee/leg wont regret it. Not to mention its just good exercise!

At home physical therapy exercises for stroke victim with paralysis?

We Answered:

Contact the rehab center where he was and ask for a "home program" (which I'm surprised they didn't give him when he was discharged home).
The PT and OT who treated him should be able to provide written literature on the subject; talk to them.
