Stroke Physical Therapy Exercises

I understand that people are just trying to be kind...?

You're gonna have to lay the law down, dude. Tell these folks they are hindering your efforts to follow doctor's orders. If ya don't want the scooter, make that fact clear, with authority! If the problem persists, you may want to have a talk with your doctor & have him/her call the people who are making this more difficult for you & set them straight.

What are the best exercises to do with a shoulder injury?

We Answered:

Hey Daniel.. First off, If you are living with shoulder pain, I would highly recommend visiting an active release massage therapist about it. They aren't "feel good" massage people. Search for a good one. They really know what they are doing - it can be absolute agony visiting them, but they really work at repairing the body's natural movement - it can takes months, but I was a skeptic.

Certain types of shoulder pain - or any type of nerve or mobility pain -slowly- subsides and fairly often the reason is not due to the symptom healing but rather the body learning to adjust and compensate for the injury/pain. (There are exceptions of course) However, if the body has learned to compensate, it may take a few years, but eventually that compensation will give way and when it does: Messy, messy pain. (That's why I recommend an AR Massage person - they are very often specializing in joint and muscle pain.)

Next.. exercises. To build width, your most ideal exercise is a lateral shoulder fly. It works the medial head of the deltoid. This is the exercise that creates a "T" with your arms. Another version of this is a shoulder raise which looks very similar only the elbows are held at roughly 90 degrees, hands in front of you and the arm is raised laterally as usual.
It sounds like you can't do a shoulder press. Can you do an incline bench? That would work, besides your chest, the anterior delt (front). I am currently struggling through a shoulder injury myself so I'll ask if you can do a different movement: First, I'll walk you into the position..
Stand. Arms at your sides palms facing each other.
Pinch your side with your elbows and "curl" your arms to your shoulders. Right now your elbows should be about a foot or so away from each other, right? Keeping your elbows the same distance from each other the whole time, with weights in your hands, can you raise your hands to the ceiling? - this is a much easier movement to stabilize than the press you described as a child raising and arm.
I currently can't do shoulder presses either, but I can do that.
Working your back is still important and I would recommend doing mid-rows or bent over rows.
Let me know how i goes.

how to get over stroke paralysis?

We Answered:

This might help: a report was released today regarding Constraint Induced (CI) therapy for stroke survivors. It has been shown to physically increase the amount of grey matter in the brain. Check out the link below for more info.

I had a stroke in September of this year. The doctors have confirmed it was not due to heart disease.?

We Answered:

I hear you, I had a stroke to and I am 49, since my stroke I had surgery on my carotid artery because I had a 90% blockage. They found out through MRI,s and ultra sounds. I to am having a hard time to get motivated I feel like I have no energy. What I found is working for me is finding something you enjoy doing, Like shopping, go shopping even if your not buying anything it gets you out and walking. You need to be around people to start that motivation. Eat healthy, make sure you are not filling up with starchy or sugary foods. I was told that a part of my brain was effected and it stopped me from remembering things short term, I also don't really want to be around my friends but i had to push myself to do these things. It is part of your healing and you need to get out at least an hour a day wether you want to or not. A healthy life style is exercise, proper diet and socializing. Once you get out and start doing things you will start feeling so much better.

I am losing tons of hair in the shower, is it because of my health condition?

We Answered:

Judging by just the information you provided -- It could be related to just 'stress and anxiety' from your health condition (or other factors in your life) -- And/or due to your abstinence from sunlight. We are designed to need sunlight to survive and function healthily. Most notably the body generates Vitamin D from short jaunts in the sun. It is this Vitamin, potential deficiency, that could create a hair loss situation -- Vitamin D is for more than healthy bones,.. it serves as a hormone responsible for a host of bodily function.

The aspirin, and exercise have nothing to do with any hairloss.

At the very least I would supplement with 800-1000 IU's of vitamin D daily.. whether you have a deficiency or not .. this will not 'hurt'. Your doctor should be more than fine that you take it.

Keep in mind it can take months before you feel the effects of vitamin D replenishment.

That said, it could be any host of underlying conditions which would only be best served with proper blood/urine tests based on symptoms from your doctor. IE: Hypothyroidism, other metabolic dysfunction, hormone imbalance and so on. These are all easily looked after/for.

So go grab a vitamin D3 supplement from the grocery store/pharmacy (non Rx) and make an appointment with your doctor to test for any potential underlying problems just to be safe.

Discuss It!
