Top Schools For Physical Therapy

Myrtle Said:

What's the difference between...?

We Answered:

Both kinesiology and ATC are fine BS degrees for PT...but you still have to make sure you take all the prerequisites required for PT school. The advantage of ATC is that if you should happen to NOT get into PT school, you'll have a better job market advantage over a kinesiologist in terms of a "fall back career."

There are many fine schools for PT...all programs accredited by CAPTE as listed at www.apta.org will prepare you for an entry level degree for PT.

Steps to be a physical therapist?

We Answered:

The most common way to obtain a PT degree is this:
1. Go to a 4 year university to work on your PT prerequisites and a BS degree. Your BS can usually be in anything you like, so long as you complete the prerequisites for the program to which you hope to apply. Some schools have recommended majors for pre-PT students and might be offered as health care sciences or rehabilitation sciences, etc. However, you could also get a degree in kinesiology, biology, etc.
2. Complete any other requirements the school is requesting: observation hours, the GRE, letters of recommendation, etc.
3. You'll usually apply to the graduate program during your senior year in college.
4. If accepted, you'll usually spend another 3 years in graduate school.

There are some other methods such as guaranteed admit programs that are typically 6 as opposed to 7...where you don't actually have to finish a BS degree before going into the program. However, these are usually at private schools like Marquette.

You can get a list of all accredited PT programs at:http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?Sect…

However, off the top of my head, UW has a great PT program.
