First, he needs to fill out his FASFA report (see link below). This is his free application for federal student aid. The deadline this year is June 30th. This will tell him what he's automatically eligible for - UAB financial aid office will send him a report telling him what they have awarded him (grants, work study, loans, etc).Now, he many not qualify for grants or work study so loans may be his only option. If that is the case, Federal direct loans are the best way to go because of their low interest rate. Look in the Perkins Loan and Stanford Loan before you look at private loans. The finacial aid office at UAB will have all of the information your son needs on these loans or you can view the link I posted below.
As for scholarships, well that depends on your son, his GPA, etc. There are tons of books on scholarships...so check out your local bookstore. I'd even pick up a book on financial aid as well.
