Universities With Physical Therapy Programs

Laura Said:

Physical Therapy Programs

We Answered:

Bachelor's degrees are typically designed to be completed in 4 years. A master's degree is typically 2 years after that.

...But the persuit to become a PT is a little different. Most programs are done in either a 3/3 or 4/3 format. This means you spend either three or four years in the undergraduate phase where you focus on your prerequisite and major classes. Then you can apply to the graduate level PT program where you take your actual PT related courses. If accepted, professional phase is typically another three years. The 3/3 format usually results in a masters degree. The most common track, however, is the 4/3 paradigm. This means you go to school for 4 years and actually complete a bachelors degree in a field of your choice, but must also complete the prerequisite courses. The bachelor's degree is required PRIOR to graduate school in this case. If accepted into the professional phase, again it is another three years. This usually results in a doctorate level degree. You can do either program, but the 4/3 program is probably the most common. Therefore, it takes people 6-7 years to complete the degree. Since OU does not have a PT program, you can certainly complete your prereqs and BS there, and then apply to a PT school such as at U of O or Langston...both of which are doctorate level programs.

You must complete either the masters or doctorate level degree from an accredited university to be eligible to sit for the licensure exam.

PT programs, as a generalization, are competitive to gain entrance and are rigerous in their coursework. It cannot typically be done on a part-time basis, and working during the professional phase is strongly discouraged.

Anyone know of a university with a good nursing or physical therapy program?

We Answered:

Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, has excellent programs in both nursing and physical therapy.

If you are sure you want nursing, I would suggest Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN, which offers A.S., B.S., and M.S. programs in nursing and whose students have close to a 100% pass rate the first time they take the R.N. examination. Students can sit for this examination upon completion of their associate degree. This college also offers an A.S. degree in pre-physical therapy.
