What Is Physical Therapy

Perry Said:

How long should you wait to have physical therapy for a herniated disc?

We Answered:

Your friends MD should really answer this question. The herniation itself is probably not the limiting factor, rather the fracture. We do not know if it's stable, unstable, if it's the body, the spinous process, etc.

Esther Said:

How effective is physical therapy for dizziness?

We Answered:

It depends on what is the cause of your dizziness. If it is BPPV, this is usually a very correctable condition...often times in just one visit unless mulitiple semicircular canals are affected.

If it's a central nervous system lesion such as a stroke or a more peripheral cause (such as a neuralgia), it's not as easy to predict and often times requires further diagnostic testing such as a VNG.

I don't do vestibular rehab myself, so I cannot give you any more details, but a have a couple co-workers who focus on this.

Good luck

Diana Said:

What school is known for teaching physical therapy?

We Answered:

In the US, physical therapy is no longer offered as a bachelor's degree. The minimum is a master's degree, but most programs are now doctorate.

You can get a list of all the accredited PT programs in the US as www.apta.org.

If you weren't planning on attending school for that long, you can also consider becoming a physical therapy assistant which is typically a two year degree. It is offered at many community colleges...the apta website also lists all PTA programs.

Good luck.

Anna Said:

Is it standard practice to go to physical therapy after severing the major flexor tendon in a forearm?

We Answered:

Surgeons can be very territorial when it comes to their work and have a set plan for recovery. Did you ask about PT and any exercises while in the cast. I would certainly bring that discussion to the doctor on your next visit, or even call. Be sure to have your questions written down, so you don;t forget anything when you have that discussion

Stephanie Said:

What branches of the military have physical therapy as a career?

We Answered:

Army, Air Force and Navy all use Physical therapists; I am not sure about the CG but did not see this as an option on the HS rating, The Marines get all their medical support from the Navy.

You have have a Master's degree to be e physical therapist (PT), and would be an officer; the services do have PT assistants however. In the Navy you'd become a Corpsman and go to a "C" school for specialized training.

I don't see an Army MOS that would seem to apply directly.

Brian Said:

What college is best for going into physical therapy?

We Answered:

Purdue has a great PT program and it is in the midwest.
