Band 5 Physiotherapist
Charlotte Said:
** Plagiocephaly **?We Answered:
One thing that is for sure is that it is definitely not too late. The cranial bones do not fuse until about two and a half years, but 5 and a half months is a great time to correct it.My baby had a helmet known as the StarBand, and it fixed it up within a few months. She wore the helmet for 23 hours a day and she barley even noticed it; she just got used to it I guess.
Tightening of the neck is known as torticollis, and this is usually the cause for plagiocephaly (flat head). Working with a physical therapist will usually take care of it, but without doing something, plagiocephaly may not correct itself.
I can only suggest you speak to an orthotist, someone that creates these helmets, and have them explain to you what they do, and the procedure that it takes. It may be scary at first, I know I was going insane, but it was such an easy process.
I used an orthotist in NY (kidisplint) who actually had her own child wear a helmet so she was really able to relate to all of my concerns. All you need is a prescription from your doctor, and I even got it covered by my health insurance.
Definitely take care of it sooner than latter, and it will be over before you know it. Check out the website KidiSplint.com to see more info. Best of luck.
