Physical Therapy Rehabilitation

Claire Said:

What will I have to do in Physical therapy rehabilitation?

We Answered:

Matt, I wish that you had stated where the fracture occurred within the ulna. If it is towards the wrist end then you are going to have to work on regaining mobility there. This maybe a difficult rehab if a pin was used to stabilize the fracture. Scar tissue will have formed at the wrist and breaking those bands of tissue that are not oriented in the correct direction is one of the first things that must be done. Gaining full range of motion of the wrist in all directions is most important for the hand works heavily dependent upon wrist movement. If the fracture is at the other end of the bone towards the elbow the work will be primarily to get full motion of the elbow in flexion and extension. This will depend upon how close the fracture is to the end of the bone. The closer to the end the greater potential for loss of motion. Having stated all of this you may come out of this with everything intact and not needing much in the way of therapy. Here is hoping that that is the case.

Does physical therapy belong to Rehabilitation Medicine?

We Answered:

Physical therapy is considered one of the rehabilitative medicine disciplines, but is also considered an allied health profession. Except for physiatry, which is a medical discipline, most of the rehabilitative medicine professions are allied health professions (PT, OT, SLP, rehab nursing), but not all allied health professions are rehabilitative medicine professions (registered dieticians, etc).

i am to do a report and am tring to find info on the history of rehabilitation or physical therapy of aging ,o

We Answered:

The ultimate reference for the history of physical therapy is a book: "Healing the Generations: A History of Physical Therapy & the American Physical Therapy Association" written by Wendy B. Murphy. It may be available at a local college library. Or you can purchase it for $75 from the APTA (http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?Sect… ). Also, the APTA website has information and pictures on it's website here: http://www.apta.org/AM/Template.cfm?Sect… . There is information on the history of the Federation of State Boards of PT here: http://www.fsbpt.org/about/history.asp

Time magazine has some old archived articles on PT:

These websites offer some information, but I would be wary of their authenticity:

Good luck!
