What does a physiotherapist do for scoliosis?

We Answered:

C, the purpose of these counter derotation exercises is to stop the progression of the curves. Stretching is not the only thing that should be done for people with this problem. You need to strengthen the muscles that stabilize the hips and back. You should be placed on a resistive exercise program to achieve this goal. As for the hips being out of place that is because they are most likely rotated and through the use of exercises and proper stretching you should be able to control that. Try these movements to see if they help you. Sit in a straight chair such as a kitchen chair. Keep the feet and hips as stationary as possible when doing these movements. Raise your left arm above your head as high as possible and note the height of your fingers. Return the arm to your side and now do the right arm. You are going to notice that one arm went higher than the other. Start with the arm that goes up the highest. Raise that arm up as high as you can above your head for 30 seconds and then rest it for 15 seconds. Repeat that cycle twice more and then do this same cycle 3 times using the opposite arm. Now twist your body to the left as far as you can and note the endpoint of rotation and then twist as far as you can to the right. You are going to find that one direction is going to turn further. Start in that direction first. Turn as far and hard in that direction as you can for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat this cycle twice more and then do the opposite direction exactly the same way 3 times. Upon completion get up and move around. There should be less pain and more mobility present. Return to the chair and now turn your head to the left as far as you can and note the endpoint of rotation. Then turn to the right and note the endpoint. One direction is going to turn further so start in that direction first. Turn the head as far and hard as you can in that direction for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat this twice more and then do the movement in the opposite direction exactly the same way 3 times. Lastly try this movement. It is the hardest of them. Bring the Left knee up as close to the Right shoulder as possible without the use of your hands. Now return the leg to the floor and do the Right knee up as close to the Left shoulder as possible without using your hands. You are going to find that one combination gets closer to the shoulder than the other. Start with the one that comes the closest. Bring that knee up as close to the opposite shoulder as possible without your hands for 30 seconds and then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat this cycle twice more and then do the opposite combination exactly the same way 3 times. Upon completion get up and move around. There should be less pain and more mobility. Do these movements at least twice a day. Talk to the physical therapist about what they want you to do and why. Ask as many questions as you want. Get comfortable with the program before you get started.

Ruby Said:

What kind of work does a physiotherapist do?

We Answered:

It is the profession that helps people achieve their maximum function capacity. Patient have a more active role in their own recovery (so things like exercises are used). But there is a large range of things that a physiotherapist is trained to treat, not just bones and ligaments, as is the typical image of a physio. You treat cardio and respiratory patients as well (so, things like helping someone recover from a heart attack) and neurological issues as well (eg. helping someone recover from a stroke). Physios can be found in hospitals or in private practice.
