About Speech Therapy

Lydia Said:

Do you choose a specialization in speech therapy?

We Answered:

Most speech pathologists work in the schools, so I guess you'd call them specialists in child and adolescent communicative disorders.
Hospital-based speech pathologists tend to specialize if there is more than one speech pathologist on staff. Personally, I specialized in swallowing disorders, head and neck cancer, craniofacial disorders, and adult neurogenic disorders. In twenty years, I never saw a stutterer, anyone with significant hearing loss, or did much diagnostics or therapy with children.

Emma Said:

Has anyone out there had success with speech therapy for a vocal cord cyst?

We Answered:

A cyst, no. Nodules, yes.
See an ENT for a proper diagnosis and, if it's appropriate, a referral for voice therapy with a speech pathologist. Any ENT will know who to refer his/her patients to. All speech pathologists are not created equal.
