Apraxia Of Speech

Alfredo Said:

How comman is apraxia of speech in children?

We Answered:

I don't know of any incidence studies for developmental apraxia of speech. It would be pretty tough to estimate, as speech pathologists see these kids in both educational and medical settings.
From my experience, it isn't a terribly common disorder, but it couldn't be called "rare", either. In 20 years in medically-based practice, I probably saw fewer than 100 kids with the disorder out of the 1000s of kids I worked with. When I worked with preschoolers in a school setting, I'd estimate that less than 10% of my caseload had apraxia.

Presence of vowel distortions
Limited consonant and vowel repertoire
Use of simple syllable shapes
Difficulty completing a movement gesture for a phoneme easily produced in a simple context but not in a longer one "

Does anyone have experience with apraxia of speech?

We Answered:

I had two nieces who had apraxia around that age. Both received excellent speech therapy and now speak perfectly well for their ages (one is 13, the other is almost 7).

My understanding is that apraxia is the inability of the signals being sent by the brain are unable to be translated to the nerves/muscles that control the mouth. If you can research any programs (eg county health dept., etc) in your area that offer speech therapy, I highly recommend looking into it. Good luck.

With my son the muscles in his mouth are weak-jaw, tongue, etc...
