Child Autism information.?We Answered:
Please by all means don't listen to Larry's response. I have a 3 yr old who is autistic. The main thing with an autistic child is speech delay except is high funtioning autism as Asperger's. The main difference between the 2 is in Asperger's there is usually no speech delay. With those that have low functioning autism, some learn to talk and keep talking, some learn to talk and stop and never talk again, some never learn to talk.My son is non-verbal and is currently on a waiting list for language therapy. Most children with autism need language/speech therapy and occupational therapy. Language therapy is for teaching them how to talk, speech therapy is more for after they learn to talk and need help with pronunciation. Another thing to consider is how are individuals speaking to the child. An autistic child can become confused quite easily. An example if you said baby book, an autistic child in most cases would not know that you are talking about a book for a baby or a book about babies, in their minds it would be a book that looks like a baby, or a baby that looks like a book. Children with autism usally don't understand idioms, puns, nuances, double entendres, inference, metaphors, allusions and sarcasm. I found that Ten Things Every Child with Autsim Wishes You Knew by Ellen Notbohm; who is an award winning author; to be very useful in this, it makes you understand how autistic children percieve things such as when talking to them and what can cause certain behaviors in them.
Each individual is different no matter how similiar their characteristics may be. A key thing too is that what you may try with one child may not always work with another child, even though their characteristics are exactly the same.
Some one mentioned Jenny McCarthy's book, omg, don't buy that. There are so many more books out there with much , much better information than what she has to offer. A portion of her info is actually misleading.
A good website to visit about autism is the Autism Society of America, they offer tons of information about autism, asperger's, and other PDD's and other diseases that have similiar characteristics to autism. It covers everything from what it is; theroies of cause; characteristics; criteria for diagnosis; treatments from therapies to diets to vitamins/minerals, etc; talks about eduaction; all kinds of useful information there.
To the parent of the boy, have them contact their local schoolboard, they can get him into a ESE pre-k class. Once he is evaluated by the school they will provide language/speech & occupational to the child if they find he is in need of it. His rights would be protected under IDEA (individuals with disabilities education act) and he would have a IEP(individual education plan) put into place. On the IEP there is a place they will list related services/aides he may need..when the services will start and for how long. Services such as therapy through the school must be written on the IEP. The services must be provided at no cost to the parent(s). If the school cannot provide the services needed, then they must provide the services to the child at no cost from other resources. The parent is included in the IEP meeting and are important contributors to the IEP. If they are not interested in getting him into ESE pre-k, they should still get themselves familiarized with IDEA & IEP's. They will play an important role in the child's education. Good luck.
