Careers In Speech Therapy

Kathleen Said:

Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist, similar careers? I need help!?

We Answered:

Many Physical Therapy schools are now graduating students with a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy). The schools themselves are few and your options of staying home and going to school part-time would be limited. Another option to consider is a PTA (Physical Therapist Assistant). Many area technical schools offer this two year program. When you graduate you typically will work with a Physical Therapist-who would generate a treatment plan and as a PTA you would implement it with the patient. Pay is approximately 1/3 that of a PT. However, due check out the Physical Therapy Association website to get more facts-becoming a PT is not impossible and a little more fact finding may help.

Another option is COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant), just as with a PTA, COTA courses are available through many area technical schools. This position also works in the field of physical medicine and would implement a treatment plan of an Occupational Therapist (OT). Pay again is approximately 1/3 that of a OT. As with PT's - OT schools are limited at this time the field is graduating with master level training. Again I would recommend the Occupational Therapy Association website for further information that could be helpful to you.

Speech and Language Pathologists are all master's trained and as with PT and OT only certain accredited universities offer programs. Consequently, it is typically a full time commitment. At this time there is no ancillary position like a PTA is to a PT or a COTA is to an OT for a Speech Pathologist. The National Asssoc overseeing speech pathology is ASHA.

I might suggest you give some thought to nursing programs. If you are at all interested in a patient care career. Nursing programs are greater in number and offer more flexibility to the students. There are also some states (and even hospitals) that will financially assist students to get their RN (Registered Nurse)

Wish you the best of luck and hope you find what you really want to do.
