Child Therapy Activities
Erik Said:
what kind of activities can be given to improve cognition of a mentally challenged child? We Answered:
You can do the same activities with this child that you can do with any child of the same cognitive level. Play games, use interactive toys, read books, play with water, sand, mud, etc. Talk to the child as you would with a child at the same mental level. Encourage any activity the child shows an interest in, but keep coming back to others. Just as with "normal" children, interest comes and goes. You can go to the library and find books that will tell you what activities are appropriate at any level. Also, be sure you include plenty of physical activities using the large muscles (running, jumping, sliding, tumbling, etc.) Again, just make sure the activities are developmentally appropriate so you choose safe things to do.Maxine Said:
What are 2 activities a child with autism could do in an occupational therapy room?We Answered:
It depends on what areas the child has delays in as to what exercises the OT will do with them. My son has delays in fine motor skills so his OT has him do things like puzzles, coloring, building blocks, cutting with scissors, stringing beads, buttoning, etc. to help him develop those skills. She also helps him with everyday things like getting dressed/undressed..putting on/taking off shoes, brushing hair/teeth, etc. My son also has sensory integration disorder so his OT also has him work with things like jello, shaving cream, feathers, crawl through tubes, swinging, taking off his shoes/socks and walking on various textures, etc. to help with his sensory issues.Mae Said:
How do I help my child deal with nightmares and other fears? We Answered:
Try getting her some games she likes that she can play with you and your husband. Spend lots of time with her playing, tickling, laughing. Hopefully she will just dream about what she is going to do with you guys tomorrow and forget her pass!!!!So Sorry to hear of her troubles!!!!
Good Luck and HAVE FUN!!!!!!

Question about sensory therapy for those who have autistic children who are head-bangers?We Answered:
The faster you come to the understanding that ASD is 24/7 the better you will be able to assist your child. Therapies at school at an office at home - need to be connected.I for one have seen some good outside therapists BUT I have seen many who while they may be well intentioned - really just will provide services as long as you still have money or insurance thus you may think your child is MORE impaired than he or she is. Not all mind you but there are some so pay attention.
