Childhood Apraxia Of Speech Therapy

Loretta Said:

Childhood Apraxia of Speech?

We Answered:

Childhood apraxia of speech isn't a life sentence, fortunately. Kids eventually learn to control their speech sounds and string them together to form words and sentences.
Your son has entered therapy at the right time. He may, indeed, be fluent in time for kindergarten.
All kids will reach a plateau from time to time. It allows for more practice of what they have learned. Don't worry; he'll come out of it and will continue to make progress in therapy.
I would work on animal noises with him during play, as well as the noises cars and trucks make. (DO NOT drill him; just play). Kids are highly motivated to produce such sounds, and using lots of open vowels will help him along.
The danger in researching apraxia is that there are many forms; developmental as well as acquired. The acquired apraxias are very resistant to treatment and progress is painfully slow. Your boy does not fit into this category. Developmental apraxias have a far better prognosis.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech?

We Answered:

My son has a severe articulation disorder (he is considered profoundly unintelligible ... testing in the 3rd percentile for articulation). They have not yet ruled out apraxia either ... but, the therapist needs to observe him more.

I've read about apraxia ... and have been worried about it from the moment he didn't babble, jargon and started talking late. But, I have seemed to ascertain from both her and other sources that *most* children do overcome it with therapy. I have a friend whose child has apraxia (he is now 7) and is very intelligible --- with just a few vowel distortions (sounds like a slight accent).

While I don't have tons of information for you ... as I'm just at the beginning of getting my son speech therapy (he is 2) .... I did want to let you know that you are not alone!
