Children Speech Therapist

Julie Said:

Do any of you parents have late-talking children? And which speech therapist do you go to?

We Answered:

Yeah I did my oldest and my youngest were both over the age of 3. They would say small words nothing big. My daughter had a pacifier so once we took that away she started talking and 5 years later she has yet to stop. My youngest who's almost four just one day started talking and now he says more than I could imagine. I didn't take either of them to speech therapy or anything ( not that it wasn't advised over and over again). I just let it run it's course I knew they would start one day of course had it gone much longer I probably would have taken them to speech.

Vanessa Said:

Can a Speech Therapist have severe Speech Impairments?

We Answered:

Like "justme" said, I would think that you could work in other areas of the field for certain things. There is no reason a person with a speech difference could not work with language, fluency, swallowing, (or EVEN articulation if it is for different sounds than the therapist him/herself has in error). Additionally, I know several therapist that stutter who are EXCELLENT stuttering therapist because they know it first hand.

I really don't think that is long as the person is competent, can explain what the patient needs to do, and provide examples, there is any reason they can't be a therapist with a speech difference.
