Marshall Said:

How can I get out of Special Ed?

We Answered:

Attempting to get out of special ed 'just to feel cool' is a bad idea.

Amber below me does not understand how college accommodations actually work. There are critical legal differences

All colleges do provide disability accommodations for elgible students. But unlike a k-12 public school, the college environment only has to provide reasonable accommodations to an otherwise-qualified student who was already admitted and capable of performing college-level work. There is no special education and no IEP in the college level environnment. It's an entirely different program.

Colleges require the student to be their self-advocate for attainment of disability services. Neither your professors nor the office staff can proactively provide accommodation services (as is happening in public school). It would now be considered an invasion of privacy according to federal law.

So, starting with your own IEP meetings during public school, you must become very comfortable with being that self-advocate. You must do this by telling your IEP meeting attendees every reason why you believe you no longer need special education services, AND be prepared to wage a fight for as long as that actually takes.

If your goal is to obtain a high school diploma and go onto college and you're concerned what people will think of you for having been in special ed, your best bet might be remaining in special education and obtaining a standard high school diploma (not the certificate of completion).

You must prove that you are intellectually capable of completing high school curriculum before any college will even take a look at you as a serious candidate.

Coolness to your peers..etc won't matter if the curriculum placement cannot adequately accommodate your disabilities in preparation for college success. Public school is the time when a school has to fully accommodate your disabilities. So being an active participant in planning your own IEP is what would be smart.

And the college is honestly not going to care you were once enrolled in special ed for any reason. They are only going to care if a prospective applicant has at least a high school diploma and an acceptable GPA. They will care if the prospective student is able to adequately function in college and was able to learn the appropriate academic...etc skills during public school.

Should i do a graduate diploma in UCD?

We Answered:

You should call the schools you are interested in, ask to speak to an advisor, and explain your situation. Explain why your GPA is what it is (like if you had some type of major life situation get in the way of your grades), explain any SLP related experiences you have (volunteering in a school, hospital, etc.), and explain why your grades would be better than that in grad school. Ask to visit the school, talk to the advisors and faculty in person, rave about how much you love their program and how you think you would be a good fit in spite of your grades. Do very well on your GRE and write an excellent personal statement. Get letters of recommendations from great SLPs working in the field!

Good luck ;)
