Dysphagia Speech Therapy
Clara Said:
In California, is swallowing and feeding in the scope of practice of Occupational Therapy or Speech? We Answered:
This is truly a controversial issue. The debate rages on.OTs don't get the training in the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory and vocal tracts that SLPs get. They get their knowledge from conferences.
Technically, OT gets the food to the mouth ("feeding"), and SLP gets it to go down (oropharyngeal transit).
Some OTs (even some PTs) do swallowing studies, but I have never been impressed with their diagnostic skills or interpretation of the studies-- they aren't specific enough to provide the information needed to design effective therapy.
