Free Speech Therapy

Darlene Said:

Free Speech Therapy for ages 6 yrs and above in California?

We Answered:

IN order to receive speech therapy services that are covered by insurance/your school, they need to qualify for services in the area of speech and language. Your private school should have a speech/language pathologist available. Has your child received speech therapy in the past? What happened as to why he/she is not being served? If not, then you should talk to the teachers /SLP herself and address your concerns. The SLP at this point, will ask you to sign an assessment plan, so that you agree to the child being assessed. The child then will be screened and the SLP will discuss the academic concerns with teachers, and if necessary, the SLP will undergo speech/language testing. In order for your child to qualify for direct services, they need to score below the 7th percentile(meaning that out of 100 children, your child scored in the bottom 7) on specific aspects of each test, if this is for language testing. If it is for speech(articulation on certain sounds) testing (like mispronouncing /r/ or /s/) then the child may qualify if they should have developmentally acquired this sound. Talk to your school's SLP and/or resource provider.

Ann Said:

Do large colleges (like UCLA) offer low cost to free speech therapy?

We Answered:

if they do-its probably only for the students there

and you would still need your parents permission until you are 18

even if you are in private school--your public school district is responsible for provideing speech services IF NEEDED. i don't know if they would say it is educationally necessary for you

Leonard Said:

Do the NHS provide free Speech Therapy for people with lisps?

We Answered:

Yes, they can if you can get a referral, but normally it is dealt with at a much younger age than this.
We struggled hard to find a private practitioner with my daughter for an issue picked up at primary school as the waiting list was so very long.

But private was wonderful as it took just four sessions to help and teach her how to stop the issue and they were an hour long and it was concentrated treatment,
