Jobs In Speech Therapy

Lee Said:

PLEASE HELP with plans of degree in Psychology/Speech Therapy?

We Answered:

Speech therapy is a great career choice. There are many settings in which you can work so it's hard to get bored. Depending on where you live, there are options for those with a Bachelors in speech - especially in the schools. I know in FL (and possibly VA) you can work in the schools for a couple years before starting a Master's program. Many states, however, require a Master's to practice as an SLP.

You can get a Master's in speech without a Bachelor's in speech, but the program will be much longer because you have to take all the speech prerequisite courses.

Good luck with your decision.

Mildred Said:

Speech Pathology or Occupational Therapy?

We Answered:

With speech pathology, yes there are jobs. The way I understand it to be is and will continue to be a huge shortage of SLPs across the nation. Occupational therapy is an interesting career as well more hands on than SLP. I am studying being an SLP-Assistant at a local community college, both interested me as well but when I researched more SLP was what I was looking for. If you go on www.indeed.com you can read the forums and gain insight into each field. From what i've learned OT is ambiguous when it comes to what they do because it covers such a broad spectrum. Its also more physical but not as physical as being a PT. The thing I like about SLP is that after I become an assistant I can take classes online toward my bachelors and masters if I want. You have to decide which one is more for you each one is different in its own way. Speech Pathology has so many options as to where you can work: schools, hospitals, clinics or setup your own practice. So it is very much in demand but you have to find out which one fits what your look for. GOOD LUCK!
