Jobs Speech Pathologist

Bobbie Said:

What kind of job would help prepare you for being a speech pathologist?

We Answered:

Anything working with kids and preferably special needs kids. They always need classroom aides in most special ed classes and they pay $10 to $20 per hour.

There are a lot of non-profits that work with special needs populations as well. There's probably more work volunteering but it's worth looking into.

SLP's make good money, but it's a lot of schooling. It's basically a Masters program. Hope this helps.

Terry Said:

What kind of jobs can I get with a BA in speech and hearing sciences?

We Answered:

I am a speech therapist and have been for 17 years. You can get jobs doing speech therapy in a variety of settings. Just make sure you get adequate training in the areas in which you want to work. For example, most of my training was in educational settings. As time moved on, I became more interested in working in healthcare and had to learn many new skills on the job. That is a draw back as well as an advantage to speech and hearing. Also, the job market is wide open. I get several calls weekly about job openings. I had an interview for a job in an upscale suburban school district that the director said "well, you have the right degree and you breath...do you want the job?" At another interview, I was told that I would be offered a job before the director even asked me any questions. It is truely that easy to get a job. Then there is the benefits to work casual call for home health care agencies and hospitals. I do this on the side when I need some extra money. With these jobs, I can always say no if I dont want to do it.
It is a great profession. Good luck.

Bessie Said:

ARE THERE ALOT OF EL. ED JOBS OR SPEECH TEACHER JOBS?

We Answered:

Speech Pathologists are in high demand all over the United States.
There are generally two routes that you can go with Speech Pathology --- you can go the medical route or the teaching route. They are two separate programs. Here in Michigan if you choose to go the teaching route, you can also work in a medical setting --- HOWEVER, if you choose to go the medical route, you may not teach because you need a specific and separate certificate for teaching.
