Jobs Speech Therapist

Justin Said:

Speech Therapist perceptions?

We Answered:

I haven't got a clue.

Though I would expect a speech therapist to be able to speak, preferably well. They'd also need to be able to open paths of communication and develop some measure of trust with those they work with. Interpersonal skills would have to be as important as clinical skills.

I can't see how much else would really matter.

I'd guess that the job entails guiding people with speech defects, maybe because of an infirmity of some kind, how to vocalise more clearly. They might work with the hard-of-hearing, or with people who have had strokes, maybe even people who have problems with their speech process through injury or surgery.

Strange question.

Willard Said:

Is It Possible For Me To Become A Speech Therapist?

We Answered:

Speech pathology has much in common with psychology. A speech therapist is sort of like a clinical psychologist. Becoming a certified therapist is a challenge even for bright students. You'll have to want it badly.

You might want to investigate all the different therapy professions. There really are a lot of them.

Willard Said:

Why do you think someone would want to be a speech therapist?

We Answered:

I am a speech therapist. I pursued it as a career because I wanted to help people to express their ideas. When you can't communicate with others, your words are held hostage. Imagine how it would feel if your words were held hostage but one day, you learned ways to free them. Now imagine how great it would feel if you helped someone achieve that goal.

It also can be very fun if you love working with people of any age. You can work with every age, from babies to the elderly. It is very challenging to become an SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) and the job is hard at times, but the reward is incredible.

Sheila Said:

is it a wise decision to start a career as a speech therapist at the age of 31?

We Answered:

If that is where you feel you can give back the most, and its feasible, whats stopping you? You will only regret it if you don't pursue it.

How does that old saying go? Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life?

And no.. 31 is not too old or too late in your life to start. I wish I was still 31! :)
