Kids Speech Therapy

Thomas Said:

Anyone have kids with speech delays? What did you do and did it get resolved?

We Answered:

I'm a mom of four children. My one son had speech delay, he has a dual diagnosis of fragile x and autism.

Therapies and interventions are important. A good therapist will provide you with tips on how to work with your child in the home environment.

This fall, if you are in the US, I recommend that you connect with your school district, asking for an evaluation. He may be eligible for early childhood development programs.

It's important that you have him in programs in which he is around typical peers who are verbal - this doesn't have to be a special program it could be as simple as a parent-n-tot preschool or gym class, or check out your local library - do they have any preschool programs?

Potty training for any child could be difficult, it all depends on the child, for my son he was potty trained during the day when he was three. I'm not sure how we managed that, but approached potty training just like I did for my other children, he was potty trained before we had a diagnosis.

My son started interventions around 2 1/2, progress was slow at first. He had speech therapy throughout the school year and I'd use private therapy during the summer. Between the ages of 4 and 5, during one summer program he really blossomed, I'm sure the therapy and the school helped but I do believe maturity played a role as well.

John Said:

how do you tell a friend that their kids need speech therapy?

We Answered:

How close is this friend? If she is a very close friend - just come out and say what you think.

If she is not a close friend you must balance the needs of the children against the friendship - which is more important?

I would say what I thought and risk it - children need advocates and while it's a lovely theory that schools will identify needs it doesn't always happen in practice.

Say it just how you did here - that you think they are lovely kids but you cannot understand them when they talk and has she considered that they might benefit from speech therapy.
