Language Speech Therapy

Anne Said:

Does a career in speech and language therapy sound like a good profession?

We Answered:

Really good, I know someone who does it and she loves it. It's also very rewarding.

Dianne Said:

What sounds like a better, more rewarding career counselling, or speech and language therapy?

We Answered:

Speech Therapists are in very short supply in the UK. So go for that.

Velma Said:

English is my second language, will speech therapy work for me?

We Answered:

Many foreign speakers want to remove their accent. But this isn't always a good idea.
As long as you understand that there is no such thing as a good accent, pronunciation lessons are good.
You should focus on sounds that you have trouble with.
I taught pronunciation in Japan and they had to focus on 'l' 'r' 'b' 'v' (and some others).
You can't learn an accent. You can only learn roughly how to produce vowel and consonant sounds using your lips, tongue and 'voice'. Some of these sounds will not be in your native language or are very different. So it is worth learning how native speakers make these sounds.

Some colleges and English language schools should provide pronunciation course. A speech therapist will be more expensive but should be able to help you.

My advice. Try learning how to make sounds with a friend. Work out which sounds you make, are different from native speakers and try to understand the correct mouth position... Then practice, practice, practice.
