Language Therapy Ideas

Pamela Said:

I want to start my own art therapy clinic at home (I have one room for this purpose). How do I start?

We Answered:

Its difficult to start a new practice or program. I started a bereavement program for kids (which used a lot of arts and crafts) and it was hard to get a base of 25 members for the group and camp. Here's what I did:
I sent colorful flyers to schools (directed at the guidance/counseling dept), churches, pediatrician offices, social services agencies, community mental health offices, and private practices. With the flyers, I included a letter that detailed my program. I later changed the letter into a kid-friendly pamphlet. My mailing list was 250 addresses long. You may want to use an actual child's drawing on your flyer to draw attention (get permission from the parents first).
I placed an announcement in the local parenting magazine. I also posted our group meetings in the health calender of the local paper.
I then got involved in a local networking group of other bereavement professionals. A lot of my referrals came from there.
Some of my referrals were from word of mouth. Do you have any children that you helped at the school? If you had a good relationship with them, you can send them information telling them that you're opening your own practice and send them some additional information to share with friends.
Are you a certified art therapist? Isn't there an art therapy organization where you can add your name to a provider directory?
Check to see if there is a local health fair or children's fair. You can set up a table with some art supplies. Talk to the parents as the kids create projects.

If all else fails, there are several books on starting your own private practice.

any creative ways to teach personal boundaries?

We Answered:

When I taught preschool we had the kids use Hula-Hoops. They stepped into them and walked around inside of them. It was actually very cute seeing a bunch of 3 year walking around in Hula-Hoops.

Trust issues, did something really horrible... Now considering therapy?

We Answered:

I think you're right in considering some kind of therapy, because yes, being let down again and again isn't nice at all, and can really damage your self-esteem as well as your ability to trust others again. I am glad however, that you recognised what you've done was wrong, but it's understandable as to why you did it, even though it shouldn't have been done anyway - and you know that :] But definitely give some kind of counselling a go, because I think it'd do you A LOT of good. In the mean time, maybe, if you haven't yet, talk to someone that you can trust about this and get some feedback from them - it'll mean a lot more coming from a loved one than some random, such as myself, over the net. But if you'd like, I can have a chat with you, if you'd like to get it off your chest at any time, or any other information - it might be more usful actually talking to someone. :] mikaylamikaylamikayla22@yahoo.com
I hope you get this sorted lovely. xx

What language should I learn?

We Answered:

I recommend French. It's a beautiful and romantic language, and could even be useful in North America (ex New Orleans, Quebec).

You could also learn Portuguese. It's related to Spanish, and is spoken in several countries in South America (like Brazil).

Of course, if you like Italian, you could do that too.

Hebrew is a very interesting language, but it's got a completely different alphabet and grammatical system than English, and that makes it pretty hard to learn. (I should know, I speak it.*) Arabic is even harder.

Need help with a good business name for a massage therapy practice!?

We Answered:

You could think of a name that is exotic and at the same time meaningful, how about "Laxo" it's the Latin word for Relax, to relieve; release, set free, liberate. Or you could include the word "Otium" that means free time, leisure, ease, peace, repose in Latin. I'm not a professor of Latin, I work in Advertising but I guess you could give it a touch of mysticism using a Latin word in the name.

Hope it helps.
