I live in Pennsylvania, and there are many programs here which provide in-home services to autistic children. Some of them do use Speech Therapists with children who are non-verbal. Many of them have Therapeutic Staff Support positions; these are for people with BA/BS degrees who provide support to autistic children in school and at home, coaching them in appropriate behavior and social skills. I would expect that NJ has similar programs, and you might be able to start there and move on to taking courses in Behavioral Therapy. Eventually you would probably want a psychology doctorate.
