Physical Therapy Assistant

Kenneth Said:

do you have to be really smart to be a physical therapy assistant?

We Answered:

You need to be someone who is willing to learn. You need to pass A and P and the national exam to pass the license exam in most states.

The PT sets up the treatment plan and the PTA carries it out. I work in pediatrics. My treatment plans often state improve balance, strength, coordination, and stair management skills. That leads the PTAs to be very creative in how to manage that patient. I have learned a lot from the PTA assistance that I work with in my current setting. They have great ideas. Many of them could be PTs if they want but they choose to be PTAs. This often was due to family commitments. We have a few PTA who have gone on to PT and one in process.

In other settings, it is a little more prescriptive as their are protocols.ex A total hip replacement protocol is pretty standard across the board.

I am the clinical education person where I work as well as guest lecturing at PTA programs. It amazes me what they need to learn and know when they come into the clinic.

Don't be afraid to try but be ready to learn and study. Best wishes

Sue Said:

Can I become a Physical therapy assistant with a felony drug conviction on my record?

We Answered:

Most likely not...most facilities complete background checks on all employees that prevents them from hiring anyone with a felony conviction.
