Preschool Speech Therapy
Allison Said:
Should I be worried about my preschoolers speech delay? Preschool teachers please help!?We Answered:
One of the best things you can do is to talk with him! Have conversations, and really listen to what he has to say. If he mispronounces something, he may not be able to hear the difference yet between your speech and his own, so help him by modeling the correct speech. But don't say You're saying it wrong. Just say, Oh I see, you mean.... using the correct pronunciation. Also, attending preschool will probably help a great deal because he will be socializing a lot and will hear other children's speech as well as adults. Don't be worrying about "special ed for pre-schoolers" because what we do is try to catch developmental problems as young as possible because some are much easier to correct when caught early. Talk with his speech therapist and teacher to better understand how you can help him, and don't think of it as a big problem. It's just another step in growing up!Jesse Said:
How can I put my 4 yr old in speech therapy, without putting them in preschool? We Answered:
I can think of 2 possibilities and there are probably more depending on what's available in your area. First, check with your child's pediatrician. Have him/her do a full medical exam to rule out medical problems such as hearing loss or teeth, tongue, or mouth with developmental abnormalities. If your doctor agrees that there are speech issues to deal with than he/she will refer you to a specialist for therapy. It may be that your insurance will cover this or you may find an office that charges on a sliding scale based on income. You can also contact your local school district. At least in our state, the special needs teachers often work with preschoolers beginning as early as 2-3 years depending on the level of intervention needed. The child does not have to be enrolled in a preschool program to access these services. Each state sets up their own regulations as to how special education is run. When calling your school district, contact the administration office and ask to speak with the Director of Special Education Services. Personally, I'd start with your pediatrician.Erica Said:
Switching careers from preschool teaching to speech therapy? We Answered:
I really think you should talk to a college counselor in the Speech Therapy graduate department and find out what your options would be. If you don't feel comfortable with the answers, remember that all universities have different programs and you can check into other schools before you make a final decision. Best of luck~Paula Said:
