Problems With Speech

Bill Said:

Does anyone that have geographical tongue have speech problems?

We Answered:

Nope, it shouldn't. Geographical tongue is just a common irregularity on the surface of the tongue. To enunciate words, the whole tongue touches various parts of the mouth so the texture of the tongue's surface wouldn't have anything to do with that. I would make an appointment with a speech pathologist; that's what they do! Good luck.

Freddie Said:

Am I too old to fix my speech problems?

Lois Said:

How do I know if my 20 month old son has speech problems?

We Answered:

way too early to tell... a lot of little kids speak funny. I'm sure he will probably outgrow it by the time hes about 5 or 6.

Tommy Said:

Can speech problems be associated with the thyroid gland?

We Answered:

http://www.lycos.com/info/hypothyroidism…

Infants with hypothyroidism are usually identified through testing after birth. This is important, because if hypothyroidism is not corrected, a child could have mental slowness or retardation problems and not grow to a normal height.

Susan Said:

Problems with my 20 month old boy (he gags himself after he eats & has a speech problem)?

We Answered:

You can use a speech and language pathologist at this age - you just want to make sure that you're referred to one who specializes in children. At 2 years of age they want to start seeing two-word sentences (more milk, etc) forming so it really is time to start working with a speech therapist.

I agree that the gagging may be related. Start by talking to your doctor - they may also want you working with an occupational therapist, or the speech and language pathologist may be able to assess if there's any structural abnormalities of his mouth which could explain the speech delay as well as the gagging. If there isn't the speech and language pathologist would know where to refer you to.
