Terrance Said:

Majoring in speech therapy?

We Answered:

Um. I just hope you'll work on your English skills a bit, since part of your job may include working on children's recognition of proper sentence structure and formation, as well as word meaning...You're going to be a teacher of sorts, you do realize. Not to offend -- I'm just saying. (I'm all too aware that my own English skills are lacking, moreso than yours.)

Anyways. Depending on the bachelor's and masters programs you choose, generally, yes, it should take 6 years. 4 years for the bachelor's (unless you somehow manage to get AP/dual enrollment credit + squeeze all your remaining requisite courses into three years) and 2 for the masters (unless it has some sort of extended practicum or such).

Majoring in that field, meanwhile. Your undergrad degree should probably be in a related field. Linguistics, speech sciences, psychology, most sciences, and possibly languages would be good for your bachelor's. Make sure you maintain a high GPA, as entrance into the masters program is competitive. You may also want to get volunteer experience in this area. I hope you have a certain fondness for language structure (syntax, semantics, the whole nine yards) as that's what this field is all about. You're also going to have to love writing up status reports, once you're done.

I wish you luck -- I'm in exactly the same position as you, as I'm going to start my undergrad degree in the fall. I hope you enjoy your program!

(I'd say I'd love to hear about it, but I probably offended too much with that first paragraph. Sorry!)

Have fun in college!
