School Speech Therapy

Billie Said:

Have you had speech therapy in middle school?

We Answered:

I didn't have speech therapy at a middle school, but I am a middle school speech therapist. We really try to have fun in therapy and make it meaningful.

If you have any concerns, be sure to talk to your speech therapist about them. We really try to make it as useful and fun for the students as we can so if you have suggestions for your speech therapist, it doesn't hurt to voice them.

Best wishes :)

Leah Said:

i had my 4 year old in school for speech therapy i called today and told the teacher that?

We Answered:

Is there anyway that you can leave him in school? If speech is helping him then I would do all that i could to keep him in school, but if you are having a problem with the teacher you may want to talk to someone at the school above her. Good luck!

Ivan Said:

Low school attendance record because of speech therapy?

We Answered:

You are making a fuss over nothing!

The school can't possibly mark him as present if he isn't there. They are correct that it would be unlawful for them to do so.

Of course speech therapy is a valid reason for absence. They could code the absences as "medical" or even as "educated offsite", so they become authorised absences. Provided you have informed the school of all the appointments, your son should have 0% unauthorised absence.

Jared Said:

My two year is saying words but not sentences. He has been through speech therapy and even has a brother older

It's hard to get specific advice over the internet because it depends so much on why your son is delayed ... for some kids it means absolutely nothing except that they're busy working on other skills like running and jumping, and for others it's because of some underlying problem (like autism) that takes more focused attention. Your pediatrician and speech therapist are the best people to give you guidance. Odds are that since he is making progress with the speech therapy (and he's still very young!) he'll have no problem at all by kindergarten. I've known two year olds who spoke less than your son -- who said just a couple words -- who were speaking normally by kindergarten. Sounds like you're doing a great job helping him!
