Speech And Hearing Therapy

Sidney Said:

Why is psychology and linguistics an important aspect of a speech therapy degree?

We Answered:

At a guess, I'd imagine that to be a speech therapist you'd need to know how the brain communicates language - so you'd need to know the starting point in the brain of the person (hence psychology), track their attempts at production of speech and try to figure out where along the line of their brain and their physical body is their speech going wrong. And for the psychological element of coaching too, with the linguistic knowledge to understand how to help them put words together - mentally, orally and physically.

Joan Said:

Is it too late for me to receive speech therapy?

We Answered:

am twenty six and still have speech and language therapy, she is also a SIT [sensory integration therapy] specialist, they dont just help with basic speech, they can help with a lot of difficulties around communication [whether speech or alternative communication-pecs,makaton etc] and language.
have lived with people far older who were fully non verbal and quite limited in understanding but still recieved SALT.

SALTs help elderly people who have strokes and lose their speech, its completely un-age related, speech delays and difficulties now recieve early intervention through SALT so it is seen more commonly as a childs therapy.

lisps are helped through SALT,but one other form have seen before is EFT [no idea what it stands for, to long to remember-its a touch therapy]-paul mckenna the stage 'hypnotist' did a serious run of tv programmes on sky one not to long ago which featured an adult with a lisp amongst many others-they were coached and helped using EFT,cant remember the name of his show-not his fake stage stuff.
doubt any of it coud compare to seeing a good SALT though, but EFT can be done by self if learn it.

Gregory Said:

Speech therapy and hearing problems?

We Answered:

Once children with speech and hearing problems turn three, they fall under the jurisdiction of the public schools/local school district.
Call the principal of your neighborhood elementary school and ask for speech and hearing evaluations.
The schools provide therapy free of charge for as long as the child requires it.
