Speech And Language Activities

Leah Said:

Speech. Auditory Processing, and Language online activities. Please.?

We Answered:

Hi. It sounds as though your friend may be suffering from a form of Aspergers syndrome. One of the therapies used with these people is training in English as a foreign language. There are websites that teach ESL, and lots of books to be had in stores. I know it sounds weird, but since she isn't processing English the way the rest of us do, she needs to learn and memorize conversational and linguistic strategies in the same way that ESL students do. Try getting some ESL materials and working with her. She may find it fun.

Georgia Said:

What type of vocabulary should a 13 month old have? Do you have fun ideas for developing language skills?

We Answered:

Well, talking to her, even if you are doing something that doesn't involve her will help. For example, put her in a bouncer facing the kitchen, then tell her what you're doing as you make dinner. "Now Mom is putting the ground beef into the frying pan!"

My daughter really liked the brainy baby videos and DVD's. They are educational and lots of fun.

speech delay in 5 year old?

We Answered:

I am a speech pathologist. Oral motor problems are not the only or main reason for speech delays. You said your child is omitting final consonants, We call that "Final Consonant Deletion" That is a phonological process. What that means is all children usually go through specific patterns of simplifying their speech when they first learn to talk, then they grow out of it. For example, Cluster reduction is when a consonant blend such as in "star" the st is usally reduced and the child just says "tar". I would expect a child to stop using Final Consonant Deletion by the age of 3.
Here are a few handouts to explain it further:

The other poster suggested oral motor exercises, these will not help unless your child has oral motor weakness. ask the speech therapist. there is not point in doing things like blowing up a balloon if that is not the cause of the problem. Your speech therapist should have explained this better to you and given you information. Ask her, she can be a resource, if you want to help him at home specifically ask her to send materials to you to work on.

This is a nice website with much information
