Speech And Language Therapist

Josephine Said:

Hi, I am hard of hearing and I want to be speech language therapist.?

We Answered:

I think you would be able to. Depending on the level of your hearing loss, the only difficulty that you may have is when working with children with sound production errors. You often have to listen carefully to hear sound errors. I don't think you would have difficulty working with individuals that stutter or those with language, swallowing, or cognitive impairments. Talk to some of the university programs and see what they think. When I was in college there was a student in my program that was hard of hearing but I don't know if she was going for speech or audiology.

Connie Said:

What is it like being a Speech (and Language) Therapist??

We Answered:

I am about to graduate and I find it to be the best job in the world!!! You have to be a people's person, caring, empathetic and hard working! There's so many areas that you could work with, and you can work with adults or children.

I will hopefully work mainly with children once I graduate, it is a lot of fun but also hard work because there's a lot of theory behind what you do.

Feel free to email me if you have any other questions

Do you think a Speech and Language Therapist would be a good career?

We Answered:

Yes, but Speech Language Pathologist would be better. It means getting both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Communicative Disorders. It also means more job security and a much higher paycheck. My daughter is a Speech Language Pathologist with the Los Angeles County Schools and she really likes her job. Contact the University of Redlands for info. They're considered one of the top schools in this area.

Amber Said:

What A-levels should i take if i want to be a speech adn language therapist?

We Answered:

My aspiration is to be a speech and language therapist and i definitely recommend Alevel Psychology as alot of speech and languge is about psychology. I also took english lanuage and history, however i would recommend biology for the anatomy part

To be honest with you, i took the linguistics degree route and i am applying for a speech and language masters now...alot of speech and language is psychology and linguistics so you can take either route really. Having done so much research myself on the course and the role of a SLT definitely go with psychology and biology if your grades permit it. And definitely get some work experience over the summer to help get a better feel for what it is all about because it definitely will help
