Speech And Language Therapy Degree

Kristen Said:

Speech and language therapy?

We Answered:

My mother has one.
Talk to the colleges and/or Universities you're interested in attending, ask their guidence department. They should be able to stear you in the right direction.

Dawn Said:

do you think a speech and language therapy degree is for less academic people?

We Answered:

NO, NO, and NO.
Speech pathology is highly academic and not for dummies.
One must know the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, hearing and vocal tracts and the brain/brainstem. We must know about degenerative neurologic diseases, traumatic injury to the brain, chest and neck, oral and throat cancer, and swallowing disorders and their treatment. That's just SOME of the medical stuff.
Childhood speech and language disorders are a whole different animal. We must know child development, psychology, phonetics, fluency disorders (stuttering/cluttering) and educational theory to treat childhood disabilities of speech and language.
There's a reason the basic degree for the profession is a master's, plus a year-long post-graduate fellowship prior to being certified and licensed.
Those who look down on speech pathologists are ignoramuses and have no sense of how important it is to rehabilitate individuals with speech, language, swallowing, voice, and cognitive disorders. These abilities are what make us human, after all.

Ron Said:

Is a modern foreign language essential to do a speech therapy degree?

We Answered:

I suggest looking at some individual university websites.....ones that you think you might like to go to. I agree that the UCAS site is pretty rubbish for looking at course details, but if you use it to do course search to see which universities offer your course it's pretty good. In the related links section you'll find a link to the course search I did for it. There don't seem to be that many universities that offer it. So I've looked at the websites of universities that say they offer it, and this is what they say:

Birmingham City: 280 UCAS points (BBC) and MUST include a science or social science (so for you that would be biology). So for this university, a language is not required.

University of East Anglia: BBB. They do not mention any specific subjects, but it would probably be worth emailing or phoning them to check if you're interested in this university

Manchester: AAB. They say a mixture of arts and science subjects is an advantage (but not essential), They say that especially biology, English Language, a modern foreign language or psychology are good. You already have two of those (biology and English Language) so it will be fine. There's no need to do a modern foreign language.

University College Plymouth St Mark St John: BBB and priority will be given to students who have studied psychology, sociology, human biology (interesting that it specifically mentions human biology), English language or a modern language

Portsmouth (foundation degree): 160 points which must include either English Language, Psychology or another social science (sociology). So you'll be fine with English Language

Queen Margaret in Edinburgh: AAB preferably including sciences, languages (including English language) or psychology. So you'll be fine with biology and English language

Reading: 320 points (ABB I think) and they say they have no specific subject preferences

Ulster: BBB and must include either English Language or a modern foreign language or maths or a science subjects

So basically......definitely stick with English Language and biology. It may be worth seeing if your school offer human biology. I would do art as well, as a creative subject and then maths too. A modern foreign language may give you a slight advantage, but not really because you've already got 2 of the subjects that they ask for, and they're only asking for one of those in the first place. So it's up to you. If you want to do French instead of art maybe, then you could.
