Speech Delays In Toddlers
Kelly Said:
Toddler speech delay?We Answered:
I have 3 sons ages 8, 3, and 2, all speech delayed and receiving services. The oldest began speech at 25 months, the next two began it before 18 months. I have worked with a lot of speech therapists over the past 6 years and here is what they say:At 24 months a child should be saying 50 words and be beginning to put two words together ex. all done.
At 18 months a child qualifies as developmentally delayed for speech if he/she has less than 8 words spoken during the evaluation, this equates to 25 percent delay. Would your son qualify, idk, its difficult to qualify before 24 months, and speech therapists count sounds as words that you wouldn't dream of counting ex. ma-EEE (monkey)
Between 18 months and 2.5 yrs toddlers undergo a 'word explosion' where they say at least one new word a day. This lasts for weeks to months.
for whatever reason its unknown but then there are the late talkers, who close to the 3rd birthday catch their speech up and have no issues at all.
The fact that he babbles is very good, 2 of my sons were completely silent.
I am a preventative type person. I have had many mammograms before 35 (and have no issues), colonoscopies (going in for my third), always go in for my paps, always go to the eyedoctor, get routine physicals, take babyaspirn daily as a cardioprotective measure yet I am still under 40 ect.
I would call early intervention, its free, they will assess and if he qualifies begin therapy. At least it would reassure you he is on track and if he's not then its picked up. I have never heard any parent say speech therapy is a waste of time. Most people are not super preventative like I am and honestly he has a lot of good strengths so its up to you.
His babbling should be strings of consonant vowels mamamama etc
M, and D are among the first sounds

Toddler Speech Delay?We Answered:
If she has eye contact, shows affection, then try not to worry. It's probably just her personality, she's probably just shy. Keep her enrolled in the playgroups, and get her started in preschool. My daughter was very shy.....and school was great help. Her and I separating was hard, but she's come out of her shell a lot. And by all means, if this worries you, bring it up to your pediatrician. After all, it's her life---and early intervention does wonders.Gertrude Said:

Just stick with the social workers & she may she may need some special ed in speech. You can get practise sheets & work with her, but I wouldn't worry too much if everything else checks out (hearing, etc.) My son had speech therapy up until 1st grade & now he is in the top level at his middle school.Ken Said:
Speech Delayed Toddler?We Answered:
teach him some sign language for his immediate communication needs. It sounds counter-productive, but it really is not. My son is 3 years, 8 months old and had a 12 month expressive delay by 27 months old. he still on occasion signs as he speaks...I am not even sure that he *knows* that he is signing when he does it, it is THAT ingrained in him. We used a series called "signing time" ( www.signingtime.com).Is your son in Early Intervention? My son got into EI at 24 months old, and at 27 months old we ordered the first 13 DVDs in the signing time series. EI paid for all of it out of his "therapy tools" budget. They also paid for 9 months of 2x weekly private speech therapy.

Speech delays with toddler, need some advice.?We Answered:
OK have you asked your sons doctor about Aspergers Syndrome? Read Different Minds by Deirdre V. Lovecky. My son at that age sounds a lot like your son. I taught him sign language. Baby Einstein has a great video I got it at right start
Also look into Peidesure shakes & hair & nail vitamins you will need to crush them up and get him to eat them but they cover a lot of what he is missing. E-mail me if you would like more help.
Hugs & good luck

toddler speech delay?We Answered:
No, a pacifier will not cause speech delay. Every child develops at a different pace. My daughter spoke in full sentences by the time she was two. My son didn't until he was three. Just encourage her to speak and make you are speaking to her like a child, do not use baby talk. She will increase her vocabulary by leaps and bounds in a language rich environment.Mitchell Said:
Upper lip frenulum in toddlers??? Speech delays or braces? We Answered:
A frenectomy is usually done at age 6 or 7. This is when the permanent front teeth come in and without doing this a gap will form between the teeth. Usually a space between the teeth on a preschooler does not cause any speech problems. If you have questions you can consult a children s dentist (pedodontist) Good luck.
