Earl Said:

How would you describe the job of a speech-language pathologist? is the pay good?

We Answered:

My son is deaf & he had speech therapy all throughout his school life. My grandmother has recently become severely disabled through a stroke & is currently having speech therapy. My daughter is now studying to be a speech pathologist.

I'd say if you're having doubts then find another career choice. You'll come into contact with a lot children & adults with disabilities & compassion & empathy are a must for a speech therapist/pathologist. I appreciate that some people feel uncomfortable with disabilities & unless you can conquer that then speech pathology isn't for you.

With regards not being into science well you do need to be into science to a certain extent. As well as anatomy & physiology my daughter has to study chemistry.

Joan Said:

Is being a Speech and Language Pathologist a stressful job?

We Answered:

My dad is a SLP. I can only speak from his experiences. He works in several nursing homes. He has a ton of one-on-one interaction with the patients/residents. He spends several hours a day working with them.

The rest is devoted to paperwork, and there is a lot of that. He often spends at least half of his Saturday catching up on paperwork, and he doesn't get paid for it since he's a salaried position (he has a set weekly wage). He's also always reading journals and news articles about the field so he can try new techniques.

As for oversight, it really depends on the place you work at, I think. Some of the nursing homes are very nitpicky and micromanage. Others aren't so bad. And sometimes doctors think they know everything about everything and make his job ten times harder than it has to be because they don't follow my dad's recommendations, and then they wonder why the residents are choking when they eat.

Is it a stressful job? Yeah, I'd say so, but he seems to really like it anyway.

Speech Language Pathologist jobs?

We Answered:

Get a Master's degree in Speech/Language Pathology, either certified or non-certified to teach. It is a field where there is currently huge demand, so you shouldn't have trouble finding something when you have your master's and the appropriate certification from your state board of education.
