Speech Language Pathology Therapy

Karen Said:

Which one is more rewarding and fun? The career of a Physical Therapist or Speech Language Pathologist?

We Answered:

I think they are both very rewarding and satisfying careers. I think they both require the same level of intellect; however, PT programs are typically harder to get into. PT programs also require a year of general chemistry AND you'll need to use that knowledge for physiology.

Job availability is a little higher for PTs, however, SLPs are always in demand. If you don't like dealing with vomit, you might have a hard time with many things that a SLP does...especially if you work in a medical setting. You'll deal with lots of phlegm, you'll have to suction tracheostomies and deal a lot with drool and secretions.

PT can be a messy job as well. If you work in a hospital, you'll be at least exposed to blood and vomit, feces, etc. You might not be the one cleaning it up, but you'll definitely see it. I've had to "hold the bucket" many times for patients....
