Pre-school child language delay- speech and language therapy? We Answered:
I also agree with the above posters. You need to seek professional advice from a therapist, however, I know in some areas it takes a while for this to happen. Until then, I would use non directive strategies of copying his actions and letting him lead the play, labelling words for him and providing a commentary to his play. He needs to hear the words and have an understanding of them before he can use them. He will not have prepositions, size etc, and needs to get verbs before anything else. Play alongside him, labelling objects for him and giving him a running commentary of his play i.e "you're pushing the car". Try to keep your language level at a similar level as his. Try not to question him too much, as adults we fall into the 'testing' trap from a very early age. If he is delayed chances are he will not know the answer, so all we are doing is setting him up to fail! Dont get caught up in colours either yet - he needs the language before he can expand it.Get your speech therapy team involved asap. Good luck!
