Speech Pathologist Salary

Carrie Said:

Speech Pathologist salary, what is it?

We Answered:

Salaries are variable depending on where you live. In California, hourly rates for nursing homes are generally 35 to 50 dollars an hour (depending on experience). You need to be well experienced with dysphagia, as about 60% to 75% of nursing home-referred patients have swallowing issues.
Hospital salaries run from about $40,000 for new grads ($35,000 for CFY), to $60,000 with 5yrs experience. Of course, the addition of benefits may reduce the salary amount. It is essential that you are able to direct and interpret videofluorographic swallowing studies. Hospitals hire speech pathologists for in- and outpatient jobs, and most expect you to do pediatric therapy, as well. You will encounter head and neck cancer, trauma, voice, neurogenic disorders, and craniofacial. The cost of private therapy is usually commensurate with the nursing home rate.
Private patient therapy is usually about the same as in a nursing home.
Go to asha.org to find out about regional reimbursement.
